After riding a few kilometres, we pulled into a service station for breakfast just north of Ayvalik on the west coast of Turkey. Here we met Hilal, a truck driver who offered us a lift to Gallipoli, approximately 200km's due north and over a big mountain pass. We jumped at the chance, especially as we were heading in the wrong direction once again.. great views from the truck!
Saying goodbye to Hilal, he seemed really disappointed when we got out. After, we realised that he had actually called home to his wife in Bandirma (where we would be taking the ferry to Istanbul) to say that he would be coming home with the two of us that evening after he had dropped off his delivery. Confused by the language barrier, we missed the opportunity but enjoyed Hilal's company and were very grateful for the ride to Gallipoli
Nick & Sandra are on a year out fitting in various trips and adventures including a bike tour to Istanbul. Having stayed in accommodation every night since London, on their final night on the road, David and I persuaded them to rough it.. it was an absolute disaster! Savage mosquito's, uncomfortable heat and the minarets of the mosques bellowing out at 3am equalled zero sleep! Sorry guys, promise it is not always like that but well done for giving it a try!
Okan & Ilker.. these guys approached us in the park to ask what we were up to. A little later, during a small storm, we called them for help! They came to meet us and put us up at their place for the next 3 nights whilst we were fixing up our bikes. In only a few days together, I can say we made 2 life long buddies, miss them already!
Kurtulus hosted David and I for 3 days and went to extra efforts to give us the best experience possible. A teacher of medical English and an asset to the Warm Showers community, Kurtulus is an inspirational man and we highly recommend stopping to meet him. Extremely grateful to him and his wife for their hospitality and friendship
