I was right, it did storm last night! We were laughing in our Hilliberg Nammatj tent though, there is nothing better than listening to a howling wind outside knowing you are as snug as a bug in a rug inside!! We emerged from our tent at 6.40am and breathed in the fresh mountain air. After breakfast and packing down our tent we braced ourselves for the downhill track. One thing we have confirmed on this trip is that the only thing Tourist Information is good for is free wifi and toilets! To think that we nearly took the advice of the young man in Cisna to detour 20km to the main border crossing from Poland to Slovakia on the busy main roads! Route 61 for bicycles only, is simply breathtaking and exhilarating. It has been a fabulous day and I hope it has been a special day for David. I am particularly smug with myself to announce that I did indeed find him a Slovakian milkmaid. Not the most conventional, but it was enough to put a great big smile on his face!!
The time is 20:33 Wednesday 28 August 2013 and we are inside our tent, pitched in the Carpathian mountain pass between Poland and Slovakia. As we climbed the gentle but continuous incline from Cisna, daylight fell away, the mountains on either side gathered dark clouds over their peaks, but David and I were determined to achieve tonights destination; Slovakia. With just 10 minutes of dusk remaining we crossed into Slovakia and caught a spectacular glimpse of tomorrow's adventure, layers of mountains and valley's and a mountain bike track to get through it. We are not sure the route will be easily passable, but we sure as hell can't wait to give it a try! By the time I have an opportunity to post this entry, we will be able to tell you! The wind is picking up outside, I sense a storm arising during the night. We are listening to crickets in the long grasses and have just heard the yelp of a large animal, boar maybe. There are bison, wolves, lynx, bears, eagles and owls lurking somewhere amongst these mountains. This is what we have been waiting for! It is incredible to think that 2 years ago David and I brushed through Bratislava in the west of Slovakia and ogled at the pictures of the mountains to the east, we made a promise then that we would come back and here we are about to tackle it in no small way what so ever! We have a big day ahead tomorrow, it's David's birthday and I have promised him I will find him an ice-cream parlour, Slovakian chocolate and a Slovakian milk maid! I'm going to cross mountains to keep that promise, now that's love!! Good night Poland, we have had a fabulous time and will tell everyone about our Polish experience at the next pitstop xxx.
